The Manna Room

About

The Manna Room distributes unclaimed food from Trader Joe's and Whole Foods to its surrounding community. Located in East Hollywood, it is a ministry of Hope International Bible Fellowship.

The organization functions as a well-run and highly regarded collection and distribution center.

Every day, its team drives to 6 Trader Joe's and one Whole Foods in the LA area. The staff at those markets have already prepared bags and boxes of soon-to-expire food, or food with damaged packaging. After filling a 15-person van, the bags and boxes are transported to 4903 Fountain to be cleaned and sorted. Utmost care is taken to provide a clean and sanitary working environment.

The food is distributed in several ways: Members of the five churches that meet at 4903 Fountain Avenue who find themselves short of nutritious sustenance for their families have the opportunity to shop for food. In addition the Manna Room provides two hot meals every daily for the homeless individuals in its neighborhood. Further, the Manna Room provides food weekly to 12 different food centers and churches.

In 2011, the Manna Room received over $2.5 million worth of food from Trader Joe's and Whole Foods Market. With this food, over 425,000 meals were eaten, at a cost of less than six cents a meal.
