B Lab

B Lab is a nonprofit organization dedicated to using the power of business to address the world’s most pressing challenges.  It supports entrepreneurs who use business as a force for good.

The organization is building a business community and the market infrastructure necessary to create a new sector of the economy that will redefine success in business.

B Lab is not comprised of activists standing against the old order; instead it is a team that is empowering people by giving them an opportunity to stand for something positive.

The organization accomplishes this by advancing concrete and integrated solutions to systemic problems.  Those problems include a lack of standards to help us tell the difference between good companies and just good marketing, and existing corporate law that demands that business prioritize shareholder value maximization to the exclusion of the value created for all stakeholders.

B Lab’s solutions empower these inspiring entrepreneurs and the movement of individual consumers, investors, workers, and citizens who support them. It drives systemic change through three interrelated initiatives:

  • Building a community of Certified B Corporations to make it easier for all of us to tell the difference between “good companies” and just good marketing.

  • Accelerating the growth of the impact investing asset class through use of B Lab’s GIIRS Rating & Analytics by institutional investors.

  • Promoting legislation creating a new corporate form that meets higher standards of purpose, accountability and transparency.

In addition to providing a means by which qualified businesses can become Certified B Corporations, the B Lab also offers an easily searchable director of Certified B Corporations, regional and national gatherings, and reduced fee services for members of the B Corps.
